Contemporary artist Ellen Gust, works in pastel and acrylic. Her work focuses how shape and color convey time, place, and most importantly mood that grabs ones attention to look more closely. How the recognizable can be blended with the abstract. She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries, juried art exhibits, and is currently represented at Gallery24 in Los Gatos, California and QD Gallery, Palo Alto, California
Mary Platt, Executive Director of the Hilbert Museum at Chapman University, said of Ellen's work " It was a different point of view...and the colors" that grabbed her attention when she awarded her first place in the Experimental/modern category in August, 2023.
In 2022, her work was awarded Best In Show by master pastellist, Michael Freeman of New Zealand, who said "The body of work talks about the artist... This work (A Sense of Futility) grabbed my attention immediately and kept it." He said of the work that it was, "masterful simplicity , bliss is more, minimum mark making, with a unique style... All of this artist's submissions were amazing."
In 2020, here's what art judge Christine Ivers, a master pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, had to say about one of Ellen's award winning work, "Red Suit".
"This impressionistic piece caught my eye immediately. With a flare of daring and the rim light that surrounds the figure I knew this was a wonderful painting. This artist was able to create a three dimensional form with so few strokes I was amazed. With only indications of sea, sand and sky through the use of pure color she drew me into this scene and story. With mark making at its best and composition to interest any viewer..."
